The Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises is the ministry in the Government of India. It is the apex executive body for the formulation and administration of rules, regulations and laws relating to micro, small and medium enterprises in India.

What is MSME (Udyam) Registration?
MSME (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises) Registration, now called Udyam Registration, is an online process initiated by the Government of India for recognizing and supporting small businesses. It gives an identity to MSMEs and enables them to access various schemes and benefits.
Who is eligible for MSME (Udyam) registration?
Any business entity—sole proprietorship, partnership firm, LLP, company, trust, or society—engaged in manufacturing or service activities (excluding trading) is eligible. The eligibility is based on investment in plant/machinery and annual turnover.
What are the MSME classification criteria?
As per the latest MSME definition:
- Micro: Investment ≤ ₹1 crore and Turnover ≤ ₹5 crore
- Small: Investment ≤ ₹10 crore and Turnover ≤ ₹50 crore
- Medium: Investment ≤ ₹50 crore and Turnover ≤ ₹250 crore
Is MSME registration mandatory?
No, MSME registration (Udyam) is not mandatory, but it is highly recommended to avail government benefits like subsidies, loan interest concessions, and participation in government tenders.
What is the fee for MSME registration?
MSME (Udyam) registration is completely free of cost on the official government portal https://udyamregistration.gov.in/. There are no government fees involved. professional service charge are extra.
How to apply for Udyam Registration?
You can apply online through the government portal by using:
- Aadhaar number of the business owner
- PAN card of the business
- GSTIN (if available)
After OTP verification and auto-fetching of data from Income Tax and GST portals, the certificate is issued.
What documents are required for MSME (Udyam) registration?
No physical documents are needed. Only basic details are required such as:
- Aadhaar of the applicant
- PAN of the business
- Business name and address
- Bank account details
- NIC code and business activity
Data is automatically fetched from GST and ITR databases.
Can a trader apply for MSME registration?
No, trading businesses are not eligible for Udyam registration. Only manufacturing and service sector enterprises can register as MSMEs.

How is the MSME Certificate issued?

Can an existing MSME re-register under Udyam?
Yes, all existing MSMEs registered under Udyog Aadhaar, EM-I, or EM-II were required to migrate to the Udyam portal and re-register to continue availing benefits.
Is there a renewal process for MSME registration?
No. Once issued, Udyam registration is valid for lifetime. However, you need to update the details if there is any change in business name, address, turnover, or investment.
Is GST mandatory for MSME registration?
GST is not mandatory for Udyam registration unless the business is otherwise required to register under GST laws. However, businesses registered under GST will have their data auto-linked with Udyam.
Can I register multiple businesses under one Udyam Registration?
No. Each business entity must register separately. However, multiple branches or locations of the same business PAN can be included under a single Udyam Registration.
What is the NIC code in MSME registration?
NIC code stands for National Industrial Classification Code, which categorizes the type of business activity. It is mandatory to select the correct NIC code while filling the Udyam form.
Can I edit the Udyam certificate later?
Yes, you can update or modify your Udyam Registration details by logging in using your registered mobile number or Aadhaar and making the required changes online.
What is the Udyam Registration Number (URN)?
The URN is a unique 16-digit identification number assigned to every registered MSME under the Udyam system. It appears on the certificate and is used to access benefits.
Is MSME registration required to apply for government tenders?
Yes. Many government e-tenders offer special preference and exemptions (like EMD waiver) to MSMEs that are registered under Udyam. It’s an important eligibility criterion.
Is there any penalty for not registering under MSME?
No penalty is imposed for not registering under Udyam. However, you may miss out on several benefits and support schemes if you do not register.
What is the difference between Udyog Aadhaar and Udyam Registration?
Udyog Aadhaar was the earlier system of MSME registration which is now replaced by Udyam Registration. Udyam is more advanced and integrates PAN, GST, and income tax databases for accuracy and transparency.
